NEW YORK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) Moscow categorically rejects the US sanctions pressure on Venezuela and its political leadership, a senior Russian diplomat said Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly commenting on new US sanctions on the Latin American country.
The US Treasury on Tuesday issued a new set of sanctions against Venezuela adding President Nicolas Maduro's spouse and key cabinet officials to the list of sanctioned individuals.
"We categorically reject the practice of sanctions pressure against sovereign states, both in general and in this particular case, against the politicians of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," Aleksander Shchetinin, head of the Department of Latin America at the Russian Foreign Ministry told reporters.
"We truly believe that such a policy in no way contributes to the solution of those problems that the country is facing today. On the contrary, they lead to a worsening of the situation," he added.
