YALTA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th April, 2019) The "Russia gate" scandal is merely a media project launched by opponents of US President Donald Trump to prevent the Russian-US relations from normalizing, German lawmaker from the euroskeptic party Alternative for Germany (AfD) Waldemar Herdt told Sputnik on Friday.
On Thursday, the US Justice Department released the long-awaited Mueller's final report of the investigation into allegations of Trump-Russia collusion and Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US elections. According to the document, the investigation did not find any evidence of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
"The masterminds of this project [Russia gate] have most likely known that there will be no revelations. But the task was not to find something, it was in this work that they have been doing in these two years, pulling countries at two sides of the barricades. This is a project, and it will continue, even if it did not find anything," Herdt said on the sidelines of the Yalta International Economic Forum (YIEF) in Crimea.
Herdt assumed that now the opponents would start checking Trump's bank operations, adding that they already requested Deutsche Bank to provide data of the president's money transfers.
"In order to keep this topic 'hot' they need to launch this so that the people start thinking again 'if they talk so much about it, then there might have been something.' In fact this is a media project to prevent these two leaders from sitting down at the negotiation table and start to pragmatically discuss cooperation for the benefit of both people and not for the showcase of one's military capacities," he stressed.
Herdt insisted that Trump's opponents would repeatedly raise such topics aimed at dividing the nations.
"Skripal, Crimean bridge - every time relations start normalizing, these 'architects' come up with a new scenario. Now no one talks about Skripal case anymore, and, in the meantime, they expelled the diplomats," he noted.
Russia has repeatedly denied meddling in the US political affairs, stressing that the allegations were merely created to excuse the loss of Trump's opponent during the 2016 presidential election.
