Russia Prepares UN Resolution Recognizing Victory Over Nazism World Heritage - Upper House

Russian lawmakers want to propose a resolution to the United Nations on recognizing victory over Nazism as world heritage and plan to invite Belarus to join the initiative, the Russian upper house speaker, Valentina Matviyenko, said on Friday.

MOGILEV (Belarus) (UrduPoint news / Sputnik - 12th October, 2018) Russian lawmakers want to propose a resolution to the United Nations on recognizing victory over Nazism as world heritage and plan to invite Belarus to join the initiative, the Russian upper house speaker, Valentina Matviyenko, said on Friday.

"We have discussed the issue [of proposing a UN resolution] with the chairman of the Belarusian National Assembly's Council of the Republic, Mikhail Myasnikovich. Russia and Belarus have a common approach here, as both countries carefully keep the memory of warriors that fell in the fight against Nazism and feats of our people. I am sure that our Belarusian partners will support the initiative [of the resolution]," the speaker said.

According to Matviyenko, the issue is very important in light of increasing number of attempts in Europe to rewrite history and justify Nazi accomplices.

Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern over a surge of neo-Nazi movements and policies which glorify Nazi collaborators in Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states. Marches in memory of deceased members of the Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS in Riga and of Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II and was responsible for numerous atrocities against civilians, have become a cause for harsh criticism by a number of international anti-fascist organizations as well as governments worldwide.
