MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd October, 2018) Moscow is prepared to have a more substantial dialogue with the United States to ensure the settlement of the Syrian crisis and the elimination of terrorists remaining in the Arab country, however, Washington is not ready for such cooperation at the moment, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.
"We have a deconfliction channel on Syria. We were prepared for an even more substantial cooperation on searching for the ways that would allow to settle the Syrian conflict with maximum effectiveness, first of all, to launch the process of refugees' return, start political talks and ensure the ultimate elimination of the remainders of international terrorism on the Syrian territory. However, the United States is not ready yet for such full-format cooperation," Lavrov said.
Moscow and Washington have different stances on the ongoing civil war in Syria.
While Russia has been one of the closest allies of the legitimate Syrian government and the country's president, Bashar Assad, throughout the war, the United States and its allies have repeatedly stated that they did not believe that it would be possible to settle the Syrian crisis if Assad remained in power.
According to media reports, the United States has been covertly providing weapons and supplies to the Syrian rebels involved in the armed conflict with Damascus. Assad himself accused Washington of trying to overthrow the Syrian government and of providing support to militants. Since 2014, the US-led international coalition has been carrying out anti-terrorist operations in the country, which have not been authorized either by the UN Security Council or Damascus.
