Russia will do everything to prevent any undermining of the mandate of the UN mission in the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday
"We have repeatedly stressed that we will accept any decision [on Kosovo] that will meet the interests of Serbia ... We feel that the West is trying to force the UN Secretariat to make some proposals that will undermine the mandate of the UN mission in Kosovo. This will be a direct blow to resolution 1244, and we will do everything to ensure that this provocative idea does not succeed," Lavrov said after meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic.
"We are very concerned that now, in New York, in the [UN] Security Council, Western countries are trying to hear how the settlement in Kosovo is going as rare as possible. They are trying to hear the reports of the Secretariat not in an open format, where all UN members can participate and can hear what the the Serbian foreign minister says about it, what other countries say about it, that they require justice and the implementation of resolution 1244.
They are trying to talk about it in private meetings, where there are no journalists, where there is no public," Lavrov said.
The Kosovo War between the ethnically Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and the forces of Yugoslavia, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro in 1998-1999, ended after the UN-backed international intervention following NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia's troops.
Pristina unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. The self-proclaimed republic is recognized by over 100 UN member states. Serbia, as well as Russia, China, Israel, Iran, Spain, Greece and a number of other countries have not recognized Kosovo's independence.
Under UN Security Council Resolution 1244, the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) was established in 1999 to ensure peace and stability in Kosovo and in the larger region.
