Russia, Uruguay Agree to Boost Defense Ministries' Practical Cooperation - Deputy Minister

MONTEVIDEO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd November, 2018) Russian Deputy Defense Minister Col. Gen. Alexander Fomin and Uruguayan Defense Minister Jorge Menendez agreed at a meeting in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo on Wednesday to develop defense cooperation between the two ministries.

"Uruguay is Russia's important and reliable partner in Latin America. The friendly relations and mutual trust, which have been binding us together for over a century and a half, form a solid basis for strengthening our cooperation in various areas and, first of all, for deepening dialogue and practical collaboration at the level of defense ministries," Fomin said at the meeting.

Fomin also pointed to the convergence of the two countries' views on key contemporary problems.

"This is illustrated by the constructive work at the UN Security Council, where Uruguay had non-permanent membership in 2016-2017," Fomin said.

The Russian deputy minister has also thanked Uruguayan colleagues for the support it had traditionally provided to the Russian delegation at the UN General Assembly in issues relating to increasing transparency in space exploration, international information security and non-admissibility of glorifying Nazism.

The Uruguayan defense minister, in turn, reaffirmed the readiness of the country's military to develop practical cooperation with the Russian armed forces.

Fomin has also invited the Uruguayan colleagues to take part in Russia's Army-2019 international defense industry forum that will be held on June 25-30.

Fomin arrived in the Uruguayan capital at the invitation of the country's defense minister. His visit is set to last until November 23.
