The Russian Consulate General in Barcelona is trying to find out whether Russian citizens were traveling in a train that came off the tracks in the Spanish region of Catalonia on Tuesday morning, a consul on duty told Sputnik.

MADRID (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) The Russian Consulate General in Barcelona is trying to find out whether Russian citizens were traveling in a train that came off the tracks in the Spanish region of Catalonia on Tuesday morning, a consul on duty told Sputnik.

The train derailed on route connecting the cities of Terrassa and Manressa, located some 40 miles to the northwest of Barcelona. According to the preliminary information, one person had died, while dozens sustained injuries. The incident has been caused by a landslide.

"We are clarifying the information [regarding the presence of Russian nationals among the train's passengers]," the diplomat said.

The derailment took place due to heavy rains that have been pouring in Spain's northeastern region.
