Russian Duma, Libya's House of Representatives Agree to Create Commission on Cooperation

The speakers of the parliaments of Russia and Libya signed an agreement to establish a permanent commission for cooperation and establishment of relations between the committees of Russia's State Duma and the House of Representatives of Libya.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) The speakers of the parliaments of Russia and Libya signed an agreement to establish a permanent commission for cooperation and establishment of relations between the committees of Russia's State Duma and the House of Representatives of Libya.

The Russian parliament's lower chamber speaker Vyacheslav Volodin met with President of the House of Representatives of Libya Aguila Saleh earlier in the day.

Following the meeting, the parties signed the agreement on cooperation, which also stated the need to further improve the constructive relations between the parliaments of the two countries.

Within the framework of the agreement, the parties intend to contribute to the strengthening of bilateral relations in various areas of mutual interest.

In addition, the parliamentarians of the two countries will interact within the framework of international organizations and conferences, as well as regularly exchange information about their activities, legislative acts, publications and other materials.

Volodin said that the commission would meet annually.

Libya has been gripped by conflict since 2011, when the country's longtime leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was overthrown and killed. The eastern part of the crisis-torn state is governed by the House of Representatives, with headquarters in the city of Tobruk. The parliament is backed by the Libyan National Army. At the same time, the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), headed by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj, operates in the country's west and is headquartered in Tripoli.
