The Sankt Peterburg diesel-electric submarine, the lead vessel of Russia's Lada class (Project 677, NATO reporting name St. Petersburg), has proven to be less traceable than Varshavyanka-class submarines (Project 636.3, NATO reporting name Improved Kilo), the manufacturer said on Monday.
"The tests of Sankt Peterburg were completed, during which it has shown characteristics much higher than the ones of the Project 636.3, which is fairly called 'the Black Hole' in terms of the degree of secrecy," Alexander Buzakov, the CEO of the Admiralty Shipyards, a part of Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation, said at a roundtable.
The construction of the Sankt Petersburg began in December 1997. It was transferred to the Russian Navy for trial operations in April, 2010.
Two other submarines of the class the Kronstadt and the Velikie Luki were laid down in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
Lada-class submarines, which carry six 533-mm torpedo launchers and can fire cruise missiles, are designed to defend naval bases, coastal waters and sea communication lines. They can be effectively deployed against both surface ships and submarines.
The Varshavyanka class is an improved version of Kilo-class submarines that features elements of advanced stealth technology, extended combat range and the ability to strike land, surface and underwater targets. A total of six such submarines have already been constructed for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
