A senior Russian lawmaker said Thursday the national delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)'s Parliamentary Assembly had "preliminary contacts" with US senators who showed interest in talks on the future of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF)
"We had unofficial contacts with US senators ... They showed interest but the ball is in their court. We are no longer pushing for this. We are waiting for them to express interest in [INF] talks," Vladimir Dzhabarov, a deputy chair of the Russian parliament's foreign affairs committee, told reporters.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is meeting in Vienna, Austria for a two-day winter session. Russia's lead delegate Peter Tolstoy warned the gathering that lives of all Europeans would be at stake if the United States followed through on its decision to quit the INF treaty. Washington suspended its obligations under the 1987 pact on February 2.
