Russian National Given 10-Year Jail Time for Trying to Join Islamic State in Syria - FSB

A Russian national has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in Russia's Far-Eastern Kamchatka region for trying to join the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) in Syria and attempting to convince another person to join an armed group abroad, the local branch of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) A Russian national has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in Russia's Far-Eastern Kamchatka region for trying to join the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) in Syria and attempting to convince another person to join an armed group abroad, the local branch of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said.

"A criminal case was launched against the man based on ... Article 30 Part 1, Article 205.5 Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code (preparing to participate in the activities of an organization that has been listed as terrorist under the law of the Russian Federation) and Article 205.

The investigation has showed that the man planned to reach Syria in 2017 in order to fight alongside Islamic State militants. The Russian national also tried to incite a friend of his to leave for the middle East and joint a terrorist organization there.

In April 2017, the man was apprehended by security services when he attempted to leave the country.
