Russian Prime Minister Medvedev Says Discussed Nord Stream with German Chancellor Merkel

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Friday that he discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the ASEM forum the Nord Stream gas pipeline project and overseas statements on this matter.

BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th October, 2018) Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Friday that he discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the ASEM forum the Nord Stream gas pipeline project and overseas statements on this matter.

"I had a meeting with Federal Chancellor, Mrs. Angela Merkel ... We discussed various issues. Let's be frank, the Nord Stream, of course, was discussed, and all kinds of statements about the Nord Stream, which are voiced overseas," Medvedev said at a press conference following a meeting with his Belgian counterpart Charles Michel.

The Nord Stream-2 pipeline project is a joint venture of Russia's Gazprom with France's Engie, Austria's OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Germany's Uniper and Wintershall, which aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas a year to the European Union.

The pipeline is expected to run alongside Nord Stream 1 through the exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

US officials have repeatedly stated that they intend to oppose the implementation of Nord Stream-2. There were also statements about the possibility of imposing sanctions against project participants.
