Russian Researchers Plan to Send Autonomous Bathyscaphe to Mariana Trench Bottom in 2019

Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects in the Defense Industry plans to carry out research of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the ocean, with the use of an autonomous submersible craft in 2019, according to the materials placed at the foundation's booth at the Eastern Economic Forum.

VLADIVOSTOK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th September, 2018) Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects in the Defense Industry plans to carry out research of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the ocean, with the use of an autonomous submersible craft in 2019, according to the materials placed at the foundation's booth at the Eastern Economic Forum.

"Unique long-term research of the Mariana Trench with the use of an autonomous craft [is planned to be conducted] in 2019," the materials read.

The images of the submersible are also presented at the booth.

The foundation plans to send the Vityaz craft and a seabed research platform to the Mariana Trench to conduct bottom mapping, search and classification of underwater objects and collection of hydrological data there, according to the materials.

This project is expected to lay the foundation for the extreme depths underwater robotics in Russia.

The foundation's booth also features equipment for the hydrocarbons output on the Arctic Ocean floor.

The Vityaz craft was designed by the Russian Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering Rubin in 2015. The submersible is aimed at carrying out various research activities at the depth of up to 11,000 meters (36,089 feet).

The maximum-known depth of the Mariana Trench is 10,994 meters.

The Eastern Economic Forum will be held in the Russian city of Vladivostok between Tuesday and Thursday.
