Russian Seismologists Register 5.5 Magnitude Quake Near Far Eastern Commander Islands

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKIY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) KAMCHATSKIY, June 6 (Sputnik) - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the coast of the Commander Islands in the Russian Far East on Thursday, a spokesperson of the Kamchatka Territory branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian academy of Sciences (GS RAS) told Sputnik.

5 took place in the waters of the Pacific Ocean at the depth of 53 kilometers [33 miles]. Its epicenter was located 110 kilometers to the southwest of the Nikolskoye settlement of the Aleutsky district of the Kamchatka Territory (Bering Island, the Commander Islands)," the spokesperson said.

The local branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said that local residents had not felt the earthquake, adding that there had been no damage or casualties caused by it. No tsunami alert had been issued.
