Russian Upper House Warns Against Use Of Force In Venezuela, Slams Calls For Coup

The Russian Federation Council warned Wednesday that it would treat potential use of force in Venezuela crisis as an act of aggression against a sovereign state and condemned calls for uprooting Venezuela's legitimate authorities

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 27th February, 2019) The Russian Federation Council warned Wednesday that it would treat potential use of force in Venezuela crisis as an act of aggression against a sovereign state and condemned calls for uprooting Venezuela's legitimate authorities.

"The Federation Council will regard illegitimate use of military force by states supporting the Venezuelan opposition solely as an act of aggression against a sovereign state and a threat to international peace and security," the upper house said in a statement.

Russia is ready to continue to support Venezuela "in following the chosen path of development based on respect for its sovereignty and relying on established constructive relations with the legitimate authorities of this state," the lawmakers emphasized.

The Federation Council strongly condemned "the inflammatory statements" by the Venezuelan opposition and foreign politicians calling for violence and a coup. The upper house urged foreign parliaments, the UN and other international organizations to support dialogue and peaceful political process in Venezuela.
