Russia's Health Watchdog Warns Russians About Salmonella Outbreak in US

Russia's health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor on Friday warned Russian citizens planning to travel to the United States about the ongoing Salmonella outbreak in the country.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th November, 2018) Russia's health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor on Friday warned Russian citizens planning to travel to the United States about the ongoing Salmonella outbreak in the country.

"According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) statement from November 12, cases of acute intestinal infections caused by pathogens of salmonellosis resistant to a wide range of medicines have been reported in 29 states in the country," the watchdog said in a statement.

The watchdog noted that the CDC investigation revealed that the infection outbreak was caused by contaminated semi-finished products of chicken and turkey meat. The statement specified that another case of Salmonella outbreaks was reported in 22 states where the infection was caused by contaminated ground beef from the JBS Tolleson meat processing company.

The incidents forced the company to recall more than 2.9 million kilograms (2,900 tonnes) of beef products from the company.

Rospotrebnadzor called on Russian citizens to take this information into account when planning trips.

Salmonella infection is a bacterial disease that primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract. The bacteria can be found in badly heat-treated meat, milk, sour cream, or eggs from infected birds. If ingested, the bacteria can cause an infection that causes diarrhea and stomach pains.
