The Kaliningrad Amber Combine, an enterprise of Russia's Rostec state corporation, said on Monday that it had completed its mining season ahead of schedule and set a historical record producing 500 tonnes of amber in 2018.
"In 2017, the factory produced a record 453 tonnes of amber. Having fulfilled the annual production plan in October 2018 ahead of schedule, the factory leadership decided to reach a new record. According to the results of the mining season of 2018, Kaliningrad Amber Combine has fulfilled its commitment and set a new absolute historical record 500 tonnes of ... amber," the statement said.
Extraction of amber within the mining allotment of Russia's Primorsky quarry started in 1976.
Its reserves amount to 110,000 tonnes of amber. Over the past 40 years, however, annual production did not exceed 350 tonnes. This year, large quantities of amber were found in the area an average of about two kilograms (4.4 Pounds) of the gemstone per cubic meter of rock.
The Kaliningrad Amber Combine was established by the Soviet leadership in 1947 on the basis of the Konigsberg Amber Factory. In 2014, the enterprise was transferred to Rostec. The Kaliningrad Amber Combine is currently the only enterprise in Russia and the biggest one in the world that mines and processes amber. The enterprise is located near the settlement of Yantarny in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, where about 90 percent of the proven world amber reserves are located.
