Russia's Vershinin, Syrian Ambassador Discuss Expediting Constitutional Committee Creation

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Syrian Ambassador in Moscow Riyad Haddad discussed issues related to accelerating the formation and launch of a constitutional committee at a Tuesday meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The meeting was held on Haddad's initiative.

"The sides exchanged views on the development of the situation in Syria and around it, including the prospects for a political settlement in this country. Special attention was paid to the speedy completion of the formation of a constitutional committee and the launch of its work in Geneva," the ministry said.

The creation of the committee, which will be tasked with rewriting Syria's main law, was agreed upon during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian resort city of Sochi in late January.

Following a meeting with then-UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Geneva on December 18, the guarantor countries of the Astana peace process Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed to boost efforts ensure that the first meeting of the body would be held in early 2019.
