Safe Zone on Syrian Border Should Be Set Up With Turkey's Participation - Cavusoglu

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday that Ankara must be among those who will be creating a safe zone in northeastern Syria proposed by the United States

ANKARA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday that Ankara must be among those who will be creating a safe zone in northeastern Syria proposed by the United States.

On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, following a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, that the latter had proposed to create a 30-kilometer (18-mile) buffer zone in Syria.

According to Erdogan, the future security zone will be controlled by the Turkish military.

"We have no disagreements with the United States over Syria, except for one or two issues: they must sever relations with the YPG [the Kurdish-led People's Protection Units] ... There is no clarity about the safe zone yet, the dates are not on the agenda either, negotiations are ongoing. But no matter who creates this safe zone, this should be done only with [the participation of] Turkey," Cavusoglu told the Ahaber broadcaster.
