MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) Saudi Arabia urges parties to the Syrian conflict to fast-track the formation of the constitutional commission that would work on amending Syria's existing constitution, Ambassador to Russia Rayed Krimly said.
"We are convinced of the need to speed up the work of the constitutional commission, so that it would include both representatives of the [Syrian] government and the united opposition. The conference in Riyadh promoted the unification of the opposition. It is important that this commission includes representatives of civil society, not connected either with the authorities or with the opposition," Krimly said at a press conference at the Rossiya Segodnya media center.
The settlement process for the Syrian conflict, which broke out in 2011, has been discussed on a number of international platforms, such as those in Geneva and Astana and the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Russia's Sochi. The Saudi capital has also hosted a number of meetings of the Syrian opposition.
The main result of the Sochi congress was the decision to create a constitutional commission that would work in Geneva and focus on amending Syria's existing constitution.
