The second foreign minister of Brunei, Erywan Yusof, invited Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday to pay a visit to the Asian country
The two diplomats held a meeting in Moscow earlier on Friday and discussed implementation of agreements reached at the negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on the sidelines of the Russia-ASEAN summit in May 2016 and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in November 2016.
"I would like to note that I am very pleased with the results of our meeting and I will welcome you in Brunei and certainly respond with the same warm hospitality that was provided to us during this visit," Yusof said.
The number of Russian tourists coming to Brunei increased fivefold since the introduction of a visa-free regime between the two countries in February 2018, the diplomat added.
During a press conference after the talks, Lavrov said that the two sides had agreed to deepen parliamentary and other relations between the states and stressed that Moscow was expecting Brunei to attend the upcoming St.
Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) and other Russia-hosted platforms.
"We are expecting the representatives of the Legislative Council of Brunei to attend the upcoming International Forum on the Development of Parliamentarism this summer ... St. Petersburg International Economic Forum this June, the Eastern Economic Forum [EEF] in Vladivostok in September and the June international meeting, held by the Russian Security Council, of high representatives responsible for security issues," Lavrov said.
SPIEF is a major global platform for communication between business representatives and the discussion of crucial economic issues. This year forum will be held from June 6-8. EEF will take place from September 4-6. The International Forum on the Development of Parliamentarism is scheduled to be held from June 4-5.
