Second Trump-Kim Summit Likely to Make Progress Toward Denuclearization - Pompeo

The upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next month will likely allow the two sides achieve more progress toward denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday in remarks to the economic forum in Davos

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) The upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next month will likely allow the two sides achieve more progress toward denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday in remarks to the economic forum in Davos.

"There are many steps yet along the way toward achieving the denuclearization that was laid out in Singapore, and achieving the security and stability and peace on the peninsula that the two leaders agreed to as well," Pompeo said from Washington in remarks broadcast via satellite to the Davos summit. "We're determined to work toward achieving that, I believe that at the end of February we'll have another good marker along the way."

Pompeo also said there would be an enormous private sector push in North Korea to help achieve the final elements of denuclearization in order to help facilitate economic growth to create stability in the country.

The White House announced on Friday that Trump and Kim would hold a second summit at the end of February, following on from their first face-to-face in Singapore last June, when the two sides pledged to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. An exact date and location for the second meeting has not been announced.

The announcement came after Trump held talks at the White House on Friday with visiting North Korean Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol on bilateral relations and denuclearization. Pompeo also met with the Korean envoy in Washington.
