Seismologists Register Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Near Russian Far East Komandorski Islands

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) KAMCHATSKY, March 7 (Sputnik) - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has been registered in the Pacific Ocean near Komandorski Islands in Russian Far East Kamchatka Territory on Thursday, the regional branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian academy of Sciences (GS RAS) told Sputnik.

"The earthquake occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

Its epicenter was located at the depth of around 50 kilometers [31 miles] and 99 kilometers to the west of the Nikolskoye settlement (Bering Island, Komandorski Islands). The magnitude of the seismic event stood at 5.5," the service's representative said.

According to the local branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the earthquake had not been felt in local settlements and had not resulted in material damage or casualties.
