Slovakia has increased funding for climate action in 2019, and was able to provide additional contributions to the UN initiative on climate in 2018, Laszlo Solymos, the country's deputy prime minister and minister of environment, said Tuesday.
"Our contributions have a progressive growing tendency and this year we were able to provide additional contributions to the [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change] UNFCCC ... For the next year, we already budgeted a significant increase of our climate finance," Solymos said at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the convention (COP24).
The climate change talks, ongoing in Poland's Katowice, are focused on finalizing the guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.
The agreement, which went into force in 2016, aims to keep the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). It has been ratified by 184 of the 197 parties to the accord.
