GENEVA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th April, 2019) Some holy Catholic relics have been recovered from the fire raging at the landmark Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, including the Crown of Thorns, the cathedral's rector said on Monday.
"We have rescued the Crown of Thorns, and the tunic of St. Louis. Several paintings were saved but some were too big to take down," Patrick Chauvet told French BFM tv channel.
He said there were no casualties but the building was significantly damaged. The work to assess the scale of the damage will begin on Tuesday.
Firefighters were reportedly continuing to pull the priceless collection of art and Catholic relics from the blaze.
"We are currently trying to preserve the back of the cathedral, which houses the most valuable works of art, which we are in the process of evacuating. The most precious works have been brought to safety," Jean-Claude Gallet, the commander of the Paris Fire Brigade, said.
