South Korean President Departs for Sacred Paektu Mountain Ending Pyongyang Trip

SEOUL (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who is currently on his official visit to Pyongyang, early on Thursday left the North Korean capital for Paektu Mountain, a spiritual site for the citizens of both Koreas, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the Seoul press center, which receives all information about Moon's North Korean trip.

The video of Moon's departure to the volcano, located on the North Korean-Chinese border, showed many Pyongyang residents accompanying the South Korean president on his road to the airport despite the rain. The North Korean citizens chanted slogans "the Unification of the Motherland."

Moon will arrive in the Samjiyon county, located near the volcano, by plane and will subsequently head to the summit, where a caldera lake is located, by car.

The South Korean president is expected to go to the lake by an aerial lift if the weather is suitable for that.

Moon will visit the volcano upon the invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Kim will accompany Moon on his trip to Paektu Mountain.

After visiting the volcano, the South Korean president is expected to finish his North Korean trip and go to Seoul.

Moon's two-day visit to Pyongyang kicked off on Tuesday. The talks between Moon and Kim, which took place during Moon's visit, have become the third meeting between the two leaders. They signed a broad agreement as a result of their negotiations. Particularly, Kim agreed to permanently dismantle a missile engine test site and to allow international inspectors to observe this process.

Moreover, Moon and Kim reached accords on ending large-scale artillery exercises and flights near the demilitarized zone between the two countries.

In April, the two leaders held a landmark meeting in the truce village of Panmunjom, as a result of which they agreed to settle the humanitarian issues between Seoul and Pyongyang, expressed their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to reaching the formal end of the Korean War in the near future.
