TSKHINVALI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th April, 2019) South Ossetian President Anatoly Bibilov said on Friday that Syria and South Ossetia were forming an intergovernmental commission, and expressed hope that it would soon start working.

"We have almost finished forming our part of the intergovernmental commission.

I hope that the joint commission will start working soon and will work directly on the implementation of the agreements that we had reached with [Syrian] President Bashar Assad," Bibilov said as quoted in a statement published on his official website.

The delegations of Syria and South Ossetia met on the sidelines of the ongoing Yalta International Economic Forum in Crimea.

The breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s. Syria recognized independence of both states last May.
