Spanish Prime Minister to Attend UNGA for 1st Time Since 2013

MADRID (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will take part in the UN General Assembly later in September and this will be the first time since 2013 when a head of the Spanish government attends the event.

The 73rd UNGA session has kicked off on September 18. The opening date of the general debate is September 25.

In recent years, Spain was represented at the UN General Assembly by King Felipe VI or foreign ministers.

It is important to personally attend the event and get acquainted with world leaders for the head of the Spanish socialist government, who came to power in early June, sources in the Spanish government said.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Sanchez is expected to hold meetings with new Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as well as with the leaders of New Zealand, South Korea, South Africa and Ethiopia and possibly Argentina.

In his speeches at the General Assembly and various forums that will be held these days in New York, Sanchez intends to raise the issues of preserving the multipolar world, security, participation of the Spanish military in peacekeeping operations abroad, human rights, migration, primarily the need for cooperation with countries of origin and transit of migrants.

Sanchez will also have meetings with US entrepreneurs who are interested in investing in the Spanish economy.

On September 28, the Spanish prime minister will travel to California, where he is expected to meet with the mayors of Sacramento and Los Angeles.
