ST. PETERSBURG (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) Russia maintains contact with all the sides to the Sudanese political crisis and believes that it is necessary to confront extremists and provocateurs in order to hold an election in the North African country, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Thursday on the sidelines of St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"We are in contact with all the [Sudanese] public and political forces, including the Transitional Military Council [TMC]. I've managed to visit the country and to communicate with TMC representatives. Of course, the situation is quite tough.
We believe that all the problems should be resolved through national dialogue, through elaborating consensus decisions on the transitional period that should result in an election," Bogdanov told reporters.
"In order to achieve this, it is certainly necessary to restore order and to fight extremists and provocateurs who oppose stabilization .... We are against foreign meddling, we believe that no one should impose anything on the Sudanese people," Bogdanov added.
SPIEF began on Thursday and will last through Saturday. Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency is an official media partner of the forum.
