VLADIVOSTOK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 29th December, 2018) A state of emergency was introduced in the Nikolayevsky district of the Russian Far-Eastern Khabarovsk region on Saturday after 10 people got caught in avalanches at a gold-mining site earlier in the day and two of them died, the regional administration said.

According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the gold-mining site was hit by two avalanches: only one worker got caught in the first one and the rest were buried under the second avalanche after they tried to rescue their colleague. According to the latest data, rescuers found one person dead and another eight alive but one of them later died at hospital.

Three of the rescued individuals have been hospitalized.

"A state of emergency has been introduced in the Nikolayevsky district," the administration said in a statement, published on its official website.

Local authorities also specified that there had been not two but three avalanches: the third avalanche blocked the road for a rescue team that was heading to the scene to help out the people trapped under the snow.

According to authorities, six people rescued from under the snow are in a fair condition.

Following the incident, criminal proceedings on the violation of safety measures during mining operations have been launched.
