Suspected Charlie Hebdo Attack Contractor Arrested in Djibouti - Reports

A French extremist who was in close contact with those responsible for the terrorist attack on Cherlie Hebdo four years ago, was arrested in Djibouti, local media reports

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st December, 2018) A French extremist who was in close contact with those responsible for the terrorist attack on Cherlie Hebdo four years ago, was arrested in Djibouti, local media reports.

According to the French newspaper Figaro, 36-years-old Peter Cherif has been arrested in the east African state of Djibouti on December 16, where he now awaits extradition to France.

The newspaper reported that Cherif is a native of Paris, where he was an active member of the local jihadist group Buttes-Chaumont. After the US invasion of Iraq, he joined the Al-Quida terror group (banned in Russia) in Iraq.

In December 2004, Cherif was captured by the US troops.

In 2006 he was sentenced 16 years, but escaped from a Mosul jail in March 2007. Cherif then joined a terrorist group in Yemen. The newspaper adds that he is suspected of financing the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

On January 7, 2015, 12 people, including two policemen, were killed in a terrorist attack on the editorial office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The attack occurred after the magazine published caricatures on prophet Muhammad. Two days later the Kouachi brothers, responsible for the attack, were neutralized by the special forces.
