MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) The swearing-in of Juan Guaido, an opposition politician who declared himself Venezuela's interim president, will deepen the existing split in the country, and the fact that Washington has recognized Guaido as Venezuelan leader will contribute to the deepening of crisis as well, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The ministry slammed those opposing the legal Venezuelan government for choosing a confrontational approach after having failed to force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro out, including by eliminating him physically.
"The swearing-in of the opposition 'acting president of Venezuela' and his immediate recognition by the United States and by a number of regional states is aimed at deepening the split in the Venezuelan society ... to destabilize the internal political situation, and to escalate the conflict further," the ministry said.
The ministry slammed Washington for supporting Guaido, claiming that such actions were another proof of US "totally ignoring international law."
"This is obviously an attempt to test scenarios of changing inconvenient governments in Venezuela," the ministry suggested.
"This deliberate and, obviously, well-planned creation of duality of power in Venezuela and the creation of an alternative center of decision-making are a direct path to chaos ... First fatalities have already been registered. We strongly condemn those who push the Venezuelan society into the abyss of a bloody civil strife," the ministry added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also voiced concern over signals coming from a range of international capitals that armed interference could not be ruled out. The ministry warned the global community against such meddling, saying that this could be "fraught with catastrophic consequences."
