Syria Supports Recognition of South Ossetias Independence Under UN Charter - Ambassador

The Syrian leadership believes that the independence of South Ossetia should be recognized internationally in line with the UN Charter, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said on Saturday.

TSKHINVALI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The Syrian leadership believes that the independence of South Ossetia should be recognized internationally in line with the UN Charter, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said on Saturday.

"The recognition of [the independence of] South Ossetia by Syria shows the Syrian leadership's point of view that South Ossetia should gain its independence in line with the UN Charter," Haddad said during his meeting with the breakaway republics President Anatoly Bibilov.

Haddad said Damascus was sure that the number of countries which had recognized South Ossetia would increase.

South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s.

Georgia still considers the two republics part of its territory.

South Ossetia has been recognized by six UN member states (Nauru, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, Tuvalu, and Venezuela), though Tuvalu withdrew its recognition of the republic in 2014. Abkhazias independence has been recognized by seven UN member states (Nauru, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Venezuela). Tuvalu and Vanuatu, however, subsequently withdrew their recognition.

The UN charter introduces the right of a people to self-determination as one of the basic principles of the international law, allowing peoples to choose sovereignty without external interference.
