Syrian Democratic Forces Discussing Self-Governance Issues With Authorities in Damascus

The second round of negotiations between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the central government are taking place in Damascus with the sides discussing the issue of the Kurds' self-governance, the co-chairman of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Riad Darar said.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) The second round of negotiations between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the central government are taking place in Damascus with the sides discussing the issue of the Kurds' self-governance, the co-chairman of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Riad Darar said.

In late July, an SDC delegation held talks with the authorities in Damascus and discussed a basis for a more extensive and large-scale dialogue on the solution of pressing problems and the settlement of the Syrian crisis.

Darar told Al-Watan newspaper that the second round of talks "is focused on self-governance issues" for the Kurds.

The Syrian Kurds announced the creation of the Federal region of Rojava in 2016, with Damascus saying the move has no legal power. Later that same year, the region was renamed to the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria. In late September 2017, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said Damascus was ready to discuss the issue of the Syrian Kurds' self-governance once the fight against the Islamic State terrorist organization (banned in Russia) ends.
