Syrian Foreign Minister, Senior Iran Aide Discuss Constitutional Committee

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Monday met with Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior aide to the Iranian top diplomat, to discuss efforts by the Astana group of mediators to create a committee that will rewrite the Syrian constitution.

DAMASCUS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th November, 2018) Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Monday met with Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior aide to the Iranian top diplomat, to discuss efforts by the Astana group of mediators to create a committee that will rewrite the Syrian constitution.

"The sides discussed ways of strengthening the strategic relationship between the two friendly regional nations, as well as the recent political events in Syria, including political efforts and contacts within the Astana process to create a constitutional committee and determine the mechanism of its work," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The diplomats agreed on the need to continue coordinating their efforts to this end. The talks were attended by Muallem's deputy Faisal Mekdad and his assistant Ayman Soussan, as well as the Iranian ambassador.

The Astana format comprises Russia, Iran, and Turkey, the three guarantor states of the Syrian ceasefire. Parallel talks on Syrian peace are conducted under the UN aegis in Geneva, Switzerland, and by the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, Russia.
