Tensions High at Kabul Polling Stations After Taliban Threatens Violence - Eyewitness

A sense of insecurity and anger at vote delays have gripped Afghans in Kabul as long lines continue to form outside polling stations, a witness told Sputnik on Saturday.

NEW DELHI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th October, 2018) A sense of insecurity and anger at vote delays have gripped Afghans in Kabul as long lines continue to form outside polling stations, a witness told Sputnik on Saturday.

Parliamentary elections are underway across most of Afghanistan amid threats from the Taliban. Earlier in the day, the Afghan Interior Ministry said at least three explosions occurred in different areas of Kabul, where elections to the lower house were taking place.

"People did not expect to spend half a day in lines.

Many hoped to exercise their civic duty and go home in an hour or two. Instead, they learned that polling stations did not have voter lists. People are furious that their lives are at risk over such miscalculations," he said in a phone interview, adding that many polling stations had opened late and describing the atmosphere as "tense."

The witness said long lines outside polling places were an easy target for militants, who threatened to disrupt the vote they consider illegitimate.
