WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) Terrorist militants who have been rooted out of Iraq and Syria are taking refuge in the Balkans, and the region remains a fertile ground for radicalization, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council.
"The region continues to be a fertile ground for recruiting radicals," Nebenzia said on Monday.
"Terrorist returnees from Syria and Iraq take refuge there."
Nebenzia added that the rate of return for refugees and internally displaced persons to the Balkan region remains highly unsatisfactory.
"There is a real threat of humanitarian crisis due to the introduction by Pristina of protective tariffs on the import of goods from Serbia," he added.
Nebenzia made the remarks at a UN Security Council which was called at the request of Serbia to address the creation of the Kosovo army.
