MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th April, 2019) Almost 40 percent of UK citizens are convinced that the deliberate spreading of fake news should be considered a criminal offense, while 36 percent of the respondents tend to agree with such a belief, a survey carried out by the Ipsos Mori pollster and King's College London Polling Club showed on Wednesday.

"The survey, ... which defined 'fake news' as 'deliberately untrue information disguised as news stories with the intention of deceiving people', found that 39% agreed strongly that 'It should be a criminal offence to spread fake news deliberately', and a further 36% tended to agree," the poll said.

A total of 14 percent of respondents neither agreed or disagreed with the suggestion to criminalize fake news, while only 3 percent strongly disagreed with it, the survey found.

The poll also revealed widespread fears about the impact of fake news, with 30 percent of interviewees having strongly agreed and 39 percent tended to agree that they were worried that "fake news could influence the result of an election or referendum in Britain," the survey's results indicated.

Meanwhile, 31 percent of UK nationals think that "fake news is easy to spot, and should never fool you if you are careful," but the number of those who disagree with such a judgment is, nevertheless, higher and totals 36 percent, according to the pollster.

The survey was conducted among 1,084 people aged 16-75 on February 22-26.
