UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st December, 2018) Swedish Ambassador to the United Nations Olof Skoog said on Friday that it is too soon for countries to disengage from the conflict in Syria, adding that now is the time for the international community to step up their engagement.
"I think it's too early to disengage," Skoog told reporters at the United Nations.
"We strongly believe that the international engagement cannot end now, actually it should be stepped up."
Skoog said countries need to remain engaged in order to ensure the start of a political process in Syria that is inclusive and leads to both elections and a reformed constitution.
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) terrorist group was defeated in Syria, and therefore he would immediately start removing US troops from the country.
