WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th November, 2018) President Donald Trump's unconstitutional appointment of Matthew Whitaker as US Acting Attorney General should be rescinded at once, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a press release.
Earlier in the day, the Justice Department in a statement said Whitaker's appointment is legal because - contrary to claims made by many Democratic lawmakers - temporary appointments do not require US Senate confirmation.
"This unconstitutional appointment should be immediately rescinded," Pelosi said on Wednesday. "Whitaker, who is obviously unfit for the position of Attorney General, should be recused from any involvement in the Mueller investigation because of his clear conflicts of interest.
"
Whitaker, the Democratic leader added, will obstruct the Mueller investigation because he has clear conflicts of interest.
Earlier this month, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned at Trump's request and was replaced by Whitaker, who had been serving as Session's chief of staff.
As head of the Justice Department, Whitaker would oversee Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election. Moscow has repeatedly denied all allegations of meddling in US elections, characterizing the accusations as an unfounded attempt to fuel anti-Russia hysteria.
