US President Donald Trump has informed members of Congress of his decision to declare a national emergency on border security, a letter released by the White House said on Friday
"Pursuant to section 201 of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C.
1621), I hereby report that I have exercised my authority to declare a national emergency in order to address the border security and humanitarian crisis that is threatening the United States," Trump said in his letter to the leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Trump noted that the declaration would allow the secretary of defense to deploy soldiers to the border to support efforts by the Department of Homeland Security to secure the southern US border.
He added that he had authorized the secretary of defense to begin emergency construction as needed to respond to what he called a "crisis" at the border with Mexico.
