The Trump administration's launching of the Remain in Mexico Plan on Friday will endanger the lives of migrants seeking asylum in the United States, Women's Refugee Commission's Migrant Rights and Justice Director Michelle Brane said in a press release
"Today's action by the Trump administration to send asylum-seekers back to Mexico is disgraceful and will result in the loss of life for vulnerable people seeking safety," Brane said in the release on Friday.
The Department of Homeland Security will begin sending back asylum-seekers who attempt to cross the US border at the San Ysidro port of entry in California from Tijuana, Mexico.
The asylum seeker will wait in Mexico for their cases to be reviewed by US immigration judges, NBC news reported on Thursday.
Previously, immigrants who passed the so-called credible fear interview could stay in the United States while waiting for the courts to decide on their asylum cases.
Brane pointed out that implementing the Remain in Mexico policy is a violation of US and international law.
The move is part of an effort by the Trump administration to create chaos at the southern US border in order deter migrant families seeking safety in the United States, Brane said.
