WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th February, 2019) US President Donald Trump said on Monday that congressional Democrats would be responsible if another Federal government shutdown occurs after February 15.
"That's up to the Democrats," Trump said when asked whether another federal government shutdown may possibly take place.
Trump noted that congressional funding to construct a border wall at the US border with Mexico continues to be the issue of his dispute with Democrats that led to the last government shutdown.
"We need a wall [but] they do not want to give us a space to detain murderers, criminals, drug dealers," Trump said, referring to attempts by congressional Democrats to cap number of beds for apprehended illegal aliens.
The last shutdown of more than a month - from December - January - was the longest in the US history and affected more than 800,000 federal workers and contractors.
US lawmakers temporarily re-opened the federal government for a three-week period until February 15 for the bipartisan House-Senate Conference Committee on Homeland Security to negotiate a deal on border security that is supposed to include funding for constructing a border wall.
