US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that more than 10 people have expressed interest in becoming the next White House chief of staff, despite "fake news" reports to the contrary.
"Fake News has it purposely wrong. Many, over ten, are vying for and wanting the White House Chief of Staff position. Why wouldn't someone want one of the truly great and meaningful jobs in Washington. Please report news correctly. Thank you!" Trump said in a Twitter message.
On Monday, both CNN and the New York Times reported that the White House had no backup plan for filling the post after Vice President Mike Pence's Chief of Staff Nick Ayers publicly turned down an opportunity to serve in the position.
According to media reports, other possible candidates include Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, but all three have said they would rather keep their current jobs.
One possible candidate who has not ruled out taking the job is Congressman Mark Meadows, media reports added.
