WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) President Donald Trumptold reporters at the White House on Wednesday that the latest trade negotiations between the United States and China have been going very well.
"We'll see what happens, but we are doing very well in negotiations with China," Trump said when asked about the talks. "One way or the other we are gonna do well."
The US president underlined his view that Beijing "very much wants to make a deal," adding that he still has a "very good relationship" with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also emphasized that the US economy was performing well, despite Chinese tariffs.
"I like where we are right now. We are doing great as an economy. They aren't doing very well because of the tariffs, but as you know fairly soon that the deal that I made with them will come off.
The tariffs will substantially be increased on China," Trump said.
Trump was referring to the truce that he reached with President Xi during a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires in December. During their talks, the two leaders agreed to a 90-day truce in their escalating tariff war to allow room for negotiating a new trade agreement. The 90-day period is set to end on March 1.
China and the United States have been engaged in a trade war since Trump announced in June that $50 billion worth of Chinese goods would be subject to 25 percent tariffs in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit. Since then, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade tariffs, levying duties on hundreds of billions of Dollars of goods.
