US President Donald Trump should not sent Mauritanian refugees back to the West African country where they faced enslavement and racial discrimination, the rights group Amnesty International said in a press release on Monday.
WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) US President Donald Trump should not sent Mauritanian refugees back to the West African country where they faced enslavement and racial discrimination, the rights group Amnesty International said in a press release on Monday.
"Amnesty International USA calls upon the Trump administration to refrain from deporting Mauritanians who have sought refuge and safety in the United States," the release said.
The rights group stressed that Trump's immigration policies put the individuals who now live in the United States at risk.
The administration could possibly send thousands of Mauritanians back home, although grave human rights abuses continue in their country.
Amnesty International noted that the Mauritanian government still employs repressive laws and disruptive tactics, including prohibiting peaceful demonstrations, blocking human rights organizations and meddling in activists' work.
Trump pledged to tighten US immigration office the day he took the office, and has directed his administration to pursue a "zero tolerance" policy toward immigrants who arrive to the country illegally.
