US President Donald Trump will visit Japan on May 25-28, becoming the very first foreign guest after the new era, dubbed Reiwa, begins, the Japanese Cabinet said on Friday
"At today's Cabinet meeting we decided to invite President Trump and the First Lady ... [to visit] Japan from May 25 to 28. So President Trump and the First Lady will be the first state guests in the new era Reiwa," Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan Yoshihide Suga said during his briefing.
He also added that on May 27, the president and the First Lady would meet their majesties the Emperor and the Empress and have dinner afterwards.
According to Suga, the upcoming visit is going to be a symbolic event for Japan that intends to enhance further relationship with the United States.
Japan's new imperial era will begin on May 1 with Prince Naruhito's ascension to the throne and the historic abdication of his father Emperor Akihito who announced in 2016 that he intended to renounce the throne because of his age.
At the moment, Japan and the United States have close and friendly relationship, characterized by intensive cooperation in different areas, such as finances, trade and military partnership. For example, according to the US-Japan security treaty, the US military has the right to utilize lands and capacities in Japan in order to maintain peace in East Asia. In addition, Japan has been hosting several US military bases on its territory since Tokyo's defeat in World War II.
