Turkey Arrests Captain Over Deadly Tourist Boat Sinking

Turkey arrests captain over deadly tourist boat sinking

ISTANBUL,(APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -6th Sept,2016) - A Turkish court on Tuesday arrested the captain of a tourist vessel that sunk at the weekend off its southern resort of Antalya in bad weather with the loss of two lives, state media said.

The boat -- rigged up with two masts and sails to look like a pirate galleon -- capsized on Saturday after being hit by a storm while doing a standard tourist tour off Antalya. Eighty-four of the 86 people on board were rescued from the Mediterranean waters.

But two tourists -- one Lebanese and one Turkish -- drowned. The captain, named only as A.T., was remanded in custody by the Antalya court on charges of causing death by negligence, the official Anadolu news agency reported.

Three other suspects were released under judicial control, it added without giving further details. The captain will now await a trial whose date has yet to be set. Pictures in Turkish media showed the stricken vessel -- replete with crows' nests and wooden decking -- capsized and sinking.

Turkey has seen tourist visitor numbers plummet in the wake of a string of militant attacks this year, with the number of foreigners visiting dropping over 40 percent in June. But the country's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts remain an attractive destination with their balmy climate, and fatal accidents involving tourists are relatively rare.
