Tusk Proposes to Hold Joint EU-Arab League Summit in Egypt in February

European Council President Donald Tusk said on Wednesday that he will propose to the EU leaders during an informal summit in Salzburg to hold a joint summit with the Arab League in Egypt in February.

BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) European Council President Donald Tusk said on Wednesday that he will propose to the EU leaders during an informal summit in Salzburg to hold a joint summit with the Arab League in Egypt in February.

The two-day EU leaders' summit kicked off in the Austrian city of Salzburg earlier in the day.

"Tonight, I will ask for support for our efforts to intensify cooperation with North African countries and the idea of calling an EU-League of Arab States summit in Egypt in February next year," Tusk told reporters ahead of the summit, as quoted in a statement by the European Council.

The EU official also said that he will urge bloc leaders to refrain from throwing accusations in regards to the migrant crisis in Europe.

"This evening I will call on leaders to stop the migration blame game. Despite the aggressive rhetoric, things are moving in the right direction ... We can no longer be divided into those who want to solve the problem of illegal migrant flows, and those who want to use it for political gain," Tusk underlined.

The European Union has managed to reduce the number of "irregular" migrants coming to the bloc from almost 2 million in 2015 to a less than 100,000 this year thanks to cooperation with third countries, according to the European Council president.

Many members of the Arab League are used as transit countries for refugees seeking to flee their countries of origin.
