Twenty Seven People Remain in Hospital After New Zealand Attack - Health Authorities

Twenty seven people remain hospitalized one week after attacks on two mosques in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, David Meates, the chief executive of Canterbury District Health Board, said on Friday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) Twenty seven people remain hospitalized one week after attacks on two mosques in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, David Meates, the chief executive of Canterbury District Health board, said on Friday.

"Twenty-seven of the people who were injured in [last] Friday's shootings are still in Christchurch Hospital, with 5 remaining in critical condition in intensive care. Two more have been discharged during the past 24 hours," Meates said as quoted by New Zealand Herald.

Last Friday, the island nation was rocked by two mass shootings that took place at Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Center in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern immediately branded the tragedy a terrorist act, saying that the country faced the "darkest day."

The attack suspect, who was promptly detained, has been named as Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian national and a resident of New Zealand's Dunedin city, some 190 miles from Christchurch. Tarrant recorded his position in a lengthy manifesto in which he expressed strong anti-migrant and anti-Muslim views.
